Discovery Charter Preparatory School (DP) located in Pacoima is now moving into the Concordia School property on Eldridge Ave with escrow scheduled to close in July. Discovery Charter Prep School is known in the neighborhood as a small, community oriented school offering excellent education parallel to private schools at no cost to the students. The Vice Principal Furioso said, “Parents wanting more individualized attention would be well served at this school because of the small student to teacher rational, which is around 20 to 1.” Walking around the campus you feel a sense of closeness and security. Students commented that they selected this school because “in a small school, all of the teachers can give you lots of attention.” Another student stated, “I feel very secure because it is so small here and everyone knows everyone.” Jackie Tavelman, a DP English teacher stated, “Small class sizes allow us to teach at a very high level.”
Discovery Charter Prep School was founded in 2002, is an alternative to public education that offers college-preparatory education. Over 90% of the students who graduate from DP attend college. They also offer a wide variety of sports including soccer, softball, baseball, basketball among others.
Dr. Karen Smith, DP Principal said , “I’m excited about the move and being part of the Sylmar family. Additionally, I am looking forward to the partnership with Los Angeles Mission College located up the street from our location, where students will have the opportunity to enroll in dual enrollment classes earning college credit, and possibly, an associate degree while in high school.”
Discovery Charter Prep School is now enrolling new students in grades 9-12th for the fall. For more iglamonica@discoveryprep.edu.information or call the DP office at (818) 897-1187 or email at
