(Long Beach, California) Chief Jim McDonnell, who has been heading the Long Beach Police Department since 2010, after serving as the second in command of the Los Angeles Police Department before retiring, announced that he is running for Los Angeles County Sheriff in the June 3, 2014 election.
McDonnell served with the Los Angeles Police Department for 29 years, holding every rank in the department up to Chief of Staff and he is the immediate past president of the Los Angeles County Police Chiefs’ Association.
He also served on the Citizens’ Commission on Jail Violence, an independent blue ribbon panel that investigated and issued a report with recommendations to bring about lasting and meaningful changes within the Los An- geles County jails and has been an active leader in state and national law enforcement and criminal justice bodies.
McDonnell announced that he begins his candidacy with broad, bi-partisan support, including many top local leaders in law enforcement. McDonnell’s initial endorsements include (all titles are for identification purposes only; organizational support is not implied):
